MLD is a light, skin-stretching massage that helps promote the movement of lymphatic fluid out of the swollen limb. It should not be confused with a traditional massage. MLD is specifically focused on the lymph vessels to help the flow of lymphatic fluid. Therapy is applied to your unaffected areas first, making it possible for the fluid to move out of the affected area, or de-congest the region. MLD helps open the remaining functioning lymph collectors and move protein and fluid into them, as well as to help speed up lymph fluid flow through the lymphatics.
There are only 2 ways for lymph fluid to move and drain, by muscle movement such as exercise, and lymphatic drainage massage. Many of us are not in a regular exercise routine and that can leave us swollen with various lymphatic fluids.
Your lymph system is anywhere your skin is. swelling can be anywhere in the body. Your lymph system is responsible for bringing and removing swelling. MLD, or Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps move that system along. your lymph system also acts as a garbage disposal. It can get clogged with toxins and be overwhelmed. MLD encourages that flow to return. your lymph system also has lymphocytes. They help repair and keep your body healthy. MLD Gets those lymphocytes to the places they need to be.
You can read all about MLD here as well as review a short video that explains the process physio-pedia.com/Manual_Lymphatic_Drainage
